What is a bed and breakfast?
A bed and breakfast is a furnished room in the inhabitant's home which receives tourists for one or more nights against payment.
We also speak of a guest house when there are several guest rooms, but only the term "guest room" is defined by law.
The price is fixed, it includes the night and breakfast and more depending on the establishment.
The service is said to be "hotelier", the bed is made, the cleaning too and the customer has nothing to do when leaving the guest room.
The number of guest rooms is limited to 5 per tourist accommodation and 15 people accommodated.
The bed and breakfast owner can also offer his guests the table d'hôtes, a meal taken together at the family table, usually in the evening.
Gîtes and bed and breakfasts, what are the differences?
Many people are not familiar with the difference between gîtes (also called furnished tourist accommodation or seasonal rentals) and bed and breakfasts, although they are two very different forms of accommodation. The gîte is a furnished rental, generally on a weekly basis. You have the free disposal of an entire building which includes a living room, a kitchen, bedrooms… The guest room is a homestay, generally rented by the night. You share the owner's house and even if the bedroom has a lounge area, the living areas are shared. In bed and breakfast, the owner welcomes you to his home. He entrusts you with the key to his house and implicitly asks you to accept his operating rules. Courtesy is key. It is desirable to inform him of your arrival time and especially to warn him in case of delay. For the rest of all in the house, it is advisable to be silent after 10 p.m. and to warn him if you have to return late.
How many bedrooms are there in a bed and breakfast?
The decree of August 3, 2007 set the number of guest rooms at a maximum of 5 for 15 people accommodated. Beyond these limits, owners can no longer use the term bed and breakfast. These are small hotels, inns, lodgings... An owner can however offer five guest rooms and also offer lodgings for rent. You may prefer to be one-on-one with an owner to discuss and take the time for a long conversation or, on the contrary, enjoy a table d'hôtes or breakfast with many guests. The number of rooms is really one of the important elements for choosing the guest house for your future stay.
What hours in bed and breakfast?
You go down to someone's house, as if you were going to a friend's house. No night watchman or day staff. Schedules are indicated to you for your arrival. You can of course contact the owner of the guest rooms directly to arrange the arrival time. But in any case, as a basic courtesy, call him if you are late or if you have a problem on the road, so that he can organize himself and keep the room for you. Don't forget that if he does table d'hôtes, he will be in the kitchen or at the table with his guests probably from around 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., which will not be easy to welcome you in this time slot. Once there, you will of course be free to come. If you come back late, he will give you the keys if necessary.
The owner will also inform you of the times at which he serves breakfast. If you are planning a very early departure or, on the contrary, a late morning, be flexible for breakfast and aware that he may not be able to be physically present. If you wish to dine at the table d'hôtes, you must be on time. Indeed it is not a restaurant, everyone eats together the same menu at the same table. It is therefore necessary to sit down at the table at the same time. If you don't like the constraints too much on vacation, the table d'hôtes may not be for you, but it's a shame you are depriving yourself of an often pleasant moment, make an effort at least the time of an evening.
Life in guest rooms, privacy is preserved
So that life in the guest house goes as well as possible, the owners ensure your privacy as much as theirs. They have planned everything to make you feel at home but limit access to certain private rooms (their bedrooms, their office, the kitchen, etc.). When you arrive, they will explain all this to you. During your stay, the owners will come into the room to empty the bins, fill up with capsules and hygiene products, change the towels.
And the children in guest rooms?
Children are always welcome and cannot be refused but they remain under the supervision of their parents. It is therefore advisable to explain to them the rules to be followed in this house that they don't know. Indeed, an accident often happens quickly (swimming pool, kitchen, fireplace, etc.). Care must be taken to ensure that the children behave like well-behaved little guests, without screaming and running around the house. What you support with indulgence will not necessarily be perceived in the same way by other guests who come to seek the calm of a guest house. If you come with little ones likely to wake up at night and wake up those around them, take great care to check that this does not pose a problem and to choose the most isolated room possible, to allow everyone to rest. At the time of booking, you can request the equipment that the owner can make available to you. He often has the possibility of lending you a suitable bed and some accessories which will limit too bulky luggage. Many guest houses offer family rooms that can accommodate the whole family at the best price. This is an interesting criterion for choosing a house that is particularly well suited to children.
How is breakfast in bed and breakfast?
In guest rooms, the night includes breakfast. This is one of the specificities of this form of accommodation. The owners will tell you the breakfast arrangements, the place and the time, and can ask you in advance what you want, coffee or tea, so as to provide sufficient quantities. Depending on the configuration of the premises, breakfast will be taken at individual tables or around a large communal table. The owners are most often present throughout breakfast. They can answer your questions about the surroundings, visits or activities and even help you organize your schedule for the day. Breakfast is one of the special moments of a stay in a bed and breakfast, it is often exceptional and can justify the choice of the bed and breakfast formula.
The table d'hôtes is not a restaurant
Some owners offer the table d'hôtes to their residents. They don't necessarily do it every night or all year round. Most of the time, you have to book a day in advance. The table d'hôtes is a meal taken together around the family table, the menu is unique, there is no menu as in a restaurant. The price is fixed. If you have specific constraints (diet, etc.), it is best to notify the owner when booking so that he can plan a slightly modified menu.
